On the Line Power Rankings – Week 7

It’s been a wild year in college football. Week 6 was no different as the streak of at least five AP Top 25 teams losing continued, causing further turnover in ballots across college football. Here is the Week 7 edition of the On the Line Power Rankings:

Notes

  • The storyline in the top five is Iowa climbing to No. 2. Iowa’s remaining schedule is as follows: vs. Purdue, at Wisconsin, at Northwestern, vs. Minnesota, vs. Illinois and at Nebraska. The second half of Iowa’s schedule has a combined record of 15-19. If you weren’t already, it’s time to seriously think about Iowa as a College Football Playoff team.
  • Kentucky is the next hopeful SEC team to take a shot at Georgia this week. The question is how will the Wildcats fare against a team that has been a buzzsaw to Arkansas and Auburn’s optimism over the last two weeks. At the moment, Kentucky is the second-best team in the SEC East, but how wide is the gap between them and Georgia?
  • Ole Miss plays in possibly the most entertaining game on Saturday from a points perspective as they take on Tennessee on Saturday night. The Rebel defense has been lit up over the past two weeks, and Tennessee is coming in with a lot of confidence on the offensive side of the ball, having scored 62 and 45 points respectively over the last few weeks. Tennessee has found their footing after a rocky start on Rocky Top, and they could make some games interesting down the stretch, including Saturday’s game against Ole Miss.
  • Should Auburn still be ranked? Well, the Tigers lost to the current No. 1 and No. 7 teams in the AP Top 25 Poll. It’s fair to ask if Auburn’s strength of victories should place them in the rankings, but you can make the same assertion about teams such as SMU, San Diego State and Texas. Does Auburn have the best victory among those teams with a night trip to Death Valley? I think so. It’s fair to give Auburn the benefit of the doubt and keep them in the top 25. Regardless, we find out about Auburn’s legitimacy when they play Arkansas on Saturday.
